What is the Takeover Challenge: How Green Can You Go?
Making informed choices about the food we eat and the things we buy are great ways we can reduce our impact on the planet. But businesses have a massive part to play as well.
So, we’re encouraging your school to take part in the First News Takeover Challenge. The Takeover Challenge is where kids go into businesses in order to find out about the world of work, and to give those businesses some fresh ideas from young people. This year the Takeover Challenge has a green theme, in partnership with WWF-UK. It’s called How Green Can You Go? That’s the question we want your pupils to ask businesses. Their mission this year is to find out whether employers in your part of the country are doing their bit for the planet. And, we will be drawing up a charter with your help, telling businesses what the next generation of workers expects from them.

First News has worked with WWF-UK to put together a set of resources for ages 7-11 and 11-14 to help you teach your pupils the basics of sustainability, sustainable business and greenwashing, and to help you ask a business about its sustainability. Each pack contains 7 resources. The resources plus downloadable links are listed below.

Reporting your findings
Once you have investigated your chosen businesses sustainability, we want you to report your findings back to us by emailing [email protected] with the subject line ‘How Green Can You Go’. We are going to draw up a charter in June with your help, telling businesses what the next generation of workers expects from them.
Deadline for reporting back: Friday 9 June.

WWF-UK Sustainable Futures
If you have enjoyed the Takeover Challenge: How Green Can You Go?, WWF-UK have created a programme so that past the age of 14, young people can continue to learn about sustainability. Sustainable Futures is a free careers programme for UK secondary schools and colleges that equips young people to thrive in a future green economy, regardless of their career path. Aimed at 14–18 year-olds and developed by WWF in partnership with Villiers Park Educational Trust and Founders4Schools, our free programme provides teachers and career leads with the tools and support to empower students to build a sustainable career.
