Media Smart and First News have joined forces to talk about boys, body image and mental health.

The Boys’ Biggest Conversation — is a campaign to encourage young men, across the UK, to talk about body image and the effect it has on their mental wellbeing.

First News and Media Smart have produced a short film, starring TV doctor and youth specialist, Dr Ranj. It features boys from schools around the country giving their views on body image and the media. In addition, from 6 June schools can access free PSHE accredited educational materials on the subject too from the Media Smart website. These resources will help young people check the advertising they come across. And talk about their body insecurities.

Our resources and film evolved from the 2016 Credos, advertising’s Think Tank survey. It explores boys’ attitudes towards body image and the role advertising and digital manipulation play in this. It found 53% of secondary school age boys said advertising put pressure on them to look good. It also highlighted how many secondary school boys now view eating disorders (56%).

They also conducted interviews with teachers and parents which showed that it’s harder for them to spot body image issues among boys. The results also showed that 56% of boys themselves said they find it difficult to talk to teachers about their looks. And 29% would even find it difficult talking to their parents.
