Growing Pupils’ Global Awareness
There’s never been a more important time for young people to have a rich understanding of the world around them. Newspapers are unique forms of non-fiction reading, telling the stories of our local, national and global communities.
They cover serious world issues and debates, fascinating technological and scientific discoveries, entertainment and sport as well as the silly oddities of everyday life, and act as a stepping stone to further non-fiction reading.
“The introduction of First News to our school has supported us to ensure our children are getting weekly opportunities to learn about what is happening outside of our school community. For our Year 6 pupils in particular, the weekly use of First News in their reading lessons allows us to provide the vital exposure required to ensure they leave us for secondary school having had multiple opportunities to explore and discuss the changing wider world around them.”
