You’ll work with two websites and one folder:

live.firstnews.co.uk/login/

  • Login: kirsty Password: uMjPkiSo#93%t04f7anWQllj

puzzel.org

Folder on the First News server

  • Go to 01 Editorial Team – Puzzle answers for app

Instructions:

  • Go to https://live.firstnews.co.uk/login/ and log in. Hover over My Sites on top left then click First News Puzzles. Go to Posts on the left hand side (the pin icon) and click All Posts to see the puzzles.
  • Open new tab and go to puzzel.org and log in.
  • Click Dashboard top right then scroll down to see the puzzle list – newest at the top so you should be proofing the top 10 puzzles.
  • Click edit on a puzzle you want to look at. Various settings are across the top left tabs – START, SETTINGS, PREMIUM and PUBLISH. If you need to make any changes to a puzzle, they’ll be in one of these. It varies from puzzle to puzzle.
  • To play the puzzle, hit the play button top right between the tick and the purple eye.
  • Any changes you make to a puzzle on puzzel.org, the green tick above the play button will turn to a floppy disk symbol. When you want to save your changes, hit that to turn it back to a green tick.
  • When you’re happy with a puzzle, screengrab the completed puzzle. Rename the image after the puzzle and issue (eg, Cryptogram 843), and drop it into the relevant folder in the Puzzle answers for app folder.
  • Now go back to the First News Puzzles page and find the post for the matching puzzle. Click on the puzzle and scroll down to Featured Image on the right hand side.
  • Click Set Featured Image then Upload files. Drag and drop your pic of the puzzle answer then click Set Featured Image.
  • The image should now be visible in the Featured Image section. Scroll up and hit Update on the right hand side. By hitting Update, any changes you made to the puzzle on puzzel.org will also be updated.
  • Now you can go back to All Posts. Don’t forget to double check the puzzles are scheduled to publish at midnight on Friday. Then you can start proofing another puzzle on puzzel.org. Rinse and repeat for most puzzles, but not all of them!

Exceptions:

  • The only puzzle that doesn’t need a screengrab is Memory as it would just be eight pairs of pictures next to each other.
  • Wordsearch and Quiz need a bit of extra work as they either look shit screengrabbed on puzzel.org or can’t easily be grabbed. Instead, use the Wordsearch Quiz Template doc in the Puzzle answers for app folder.
  • Quiz – In the Indesign doc, write the answers, screengrab that and upload to the First News Puzzles site as explained above.
  • Wordsearch – For the wordsearch, screengrab the wordsearch from puzzels.org and drop the image on the Indesign doc. Now complete the wordsearch by circling the words with the red outlines. Once finished, screengrab it. You’ll probably have to reduce the file size (shouldn’t be more than 1mb) on tinypng.com. Then you can upload the image to the First News Puzzles site as explained above.
