Why more than 9,000 schools choose First News Education

First News, the award-winning newspaper for children is delivered weekly into schools across the UK. Covering politics to entertainment, sports to science, history to environmental issues and everything in between there are stores to interest and fascinate all children.

First News Education provides teaching professionals with an invaluable platform to advance their pupils’ core literacy levels and develop a love of reading. Through the newspaper and resources our goal is twofold:

  • to give children and teachers access to a wide range of current and relevant non-fiction reading materials which help develop an understanding of UK and international news stories.
  • to provide teachers of Key stage 2 and 3 with flexible, time-saving resources to nurture and enhance reading levels, comprehension skills and writing.

Using non-fiction in your school with First News

Delving into the latest stories through First News, provides young people with an accessible way to understand the world, enrich their knowledge, encourage curiosity and build confidence in sharing ideas and opinions. Through reading this wide range of non-fictional material students extend their vocabulary and build a greater comprehension of the world around them. In turn this helps with expression and writing skills whilst supporting their personal and emotional growth. First News is used in classrooms for guided-reading and to encourage wider reading.

Many schools are adopting First New Education specifically to work with intervention groups.

Created to supplement the newspaper are the two educational tools, the iHub and Activity Sheets. The resources are comprised of weekly reading-based activities centred around the latest stories covered in First News. They are available at three different levels so teachers are able to accommodate the wide range of abilities within one class.
