School’s out!

Fun activities with First News this summer!

School’s out… and while that might mean lie-ins and no homework, it also brings six whole weeks to fill with fun! Feeling a bit daunted by the endless free time? Don’t worry. We’ve put together a handy summer activities guide to help keep kids entertained and inspired with First News all summer long.

1. Write us a Your News report

Is there something you’re passionate about? Going on a fun adventure? Whether it’s a trip to the beach, your local library, or even a story about your pet, we want to hear it! Send your story to [email protected] for the chance to have it featured in the newspaper.

Need help getting started? Check out our top tips for junior journalists.

2. Enter our Words Matter poetry competition

Words can make people laugh, think, or feel inspired and we want to hear how you use them! Write a poem about the power of words and you could win Amazon vouchers or National Book Tokens. The best entries will be judged by a special panel, including actor Will Poulter (yes, really!) and may even be featured in First NewsClick here to enter and find out more.

Deadline for entries is Friday 19 September 2025.

3. Check out our summer word search
